Warning signs that call for attention

Electrical panels normally operate quietly. A change in sound, temperature, odor, or breaker behavior can indicate a loose connection, damaged component, moisture problem, overload, or fault.

• Buzzing, sizzling, crackling, or popping
• A burning or fish-like odor
• Heat, discoloration, scorching, or melted material
• Rust, water, condensation, or corrosion
• Breakers that trip repeatedly or will not reset
• Loose equipment, missing covers, or exposed openings

What not to do

Do not remove the dead-front cover, reach inside the panel, tape a breaker in place, substitute a larger breaker, or spray water or cleaner near electrical equipment. The interior can contain energized parts even when individual branch breakers are off.

Emergency versus service call

For smoke, flame, active arcing, or immediate danger, move people to safety and call 911. For abnormal sounds, odor, heat, corrosion, or recurring trips without an active emergency, keep clear and call a licensed electrician.
